In this two-day course master trainer David Johnston teaches participants how to approach construction, design and development from a green building mindset and prepares professionals to take the Green Advantage Certification exam.

This training is the first part of a series of sessions that will focus on the integrated design process (IDP) and give the building professional community in the DC metro region a strong skill set to incorporate IDP into their projects. Integrated design is necessary in order to achieve high performance buildings while avoiding or minimizing incremental costs. The series is for all stakeholders involved in the building process, including its design, construction, operation and occupancy. Participants will come away with the collaborative and strategic skills required to develop and realize clearly defined and challenging functional, environmental and economic goals and objectives.

Conduction, convection and radiation heat transfer mechanisms, as related to specific areas of the home, are explored in detail. These principles are the basis of understanding how homes work and how to treat the problems of comfort, mold, indoor air quality and energy efficiency. The course is geared toward anyone involved in residential construction and applies to both new construction and remodeling.

Weatherization Training

Weatherization training is designed to meet the education needs of industry professionals working to retrofit existing building stock. It focuses on the “low hanging fruit” of energy conservation measures; sealing, caulking, weather stripping, hot water pipe insulation and other fundamental retrofit measures. These techniques are necessary to weatherize over 90% of the housing stock in the DC metro area. This training is geared toward relatively new entries into the building industry and those wanting to expand their weatherization skills to meet upcoming industry demands.
